“Explain” は「人に〜を説明する」と言いたいとき、直接その人を目的語にすることはできません。つまり、「me」をすぐ後ろに置いて “explained me” とは言えません。
「〜について人に説明する」と言いたい場合は、以下のどちらかの形になります：
- explain + 物（内容） + to + 人
例：She explained the problem to me. - explain + to + 人 + that節（〜ということ）
例：She explained to me that Filipinos love sweet rice cakes.
※今回の文ではこの2番目の形が使われています。
正しい表現：
She explained to me that Filipinos love sweet rice cakes.
補足：
“explain” は第4文型（explain + 人 + 物）にはならない動詞です。つまり “She explained me something” のような形にはできません。これは “say,” “describe,” “introduce” なども同様で、常に to を必要とします。

どこを替えると良くなる？

この文では「妻がフィリピン人であること」「妻が1週間前にフィリピンに帰国していたこと」「その妻を訪ねて自分がフィリピンに行ったこと」の3点を自然な形で1文に含める必要があります。そのため、それぞれの情報をどのように表せばシンプルかつ明確に伝えられるか、工夫が求められる文です。
たとえば、“my Filipino wife” とすることで、「妻がフィリピン人である」という情報が自然に含まれます。
また、“who had returned there a week before me” によって、「私より1週間早く帰国していた」という時系列がはっきり示されます。
これにより、文が一つにまとまり、情報が整理されて伝わりやすくなります。
