私は、乳がんの手術を受けた病院で、半年に一度、定期検診を受けていました。
次の定期検診は、内視鏡検査と造影CT検査の翌週に予定されていました。このスケジュールは、定期検診の前に体の不調の原因をはっきりさせておきたい、という私自身の希望で組んだものです。
検査結果は、あらかじめ手術を受けた病院の主治医に送ってもらってありました。
私が病院を訪れたとき、先生はすでに、必要と思われるさまざまな検査や診察の予定を立てて、待っていてくださいました。
第六話
The following week, I had my regular checkup scheduled at the hospital where I had undergone surgery for breast cancer.
Before the appointment, the gastroenterologist at my local hospital compiled the results of my CT scan and endoscopy and sent them to my breast surgeon.
My breast surgeon arranged for me to see both a gynecologist and a hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgeon on the same day.
He said, “Tumor marker values, which usually rise if breast cancer comes back, have not increased at all.
We need to consider the possibility of tumors other than breast cancer.”
The mass around the duodenum, which was causing a problem with food passing through, also raised the possibility of a pancreatic tumoｒ.
He added that he could not conclude it was a recurrence of breast cancer until ovarian and pancreatic tumors were ruled out.
He also arranged for me to see a urologist to address the hydronephrosis and a gastrointestinal surgeon for the evaluation and treatment of the duodenal transit disorder.
I first visited the gynecologist, who scheduled an MRI scan to perform a more detailed examination of my ovaries.
Then, the hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgeon scheduled a CT scan and an endoscopic ultrasound to examine my pancreas more carefully.
The subsequent week was a whirlwind of tests and doctors’ appointments, and I had to take the entire week off from work.
